What is energy broker commission?

An energy broker helps arrange a gas or electricity contract between a business and a supplier. The broker may charge the business directly or receive a payment from the supplier that is included in the energy price. The broker and the supplier perform different roles: your supply contract is with the supplier.

Ofgem explains these payment arrangements in its guidance on energy intermediaries. Paying commission does not, by itself, establish that anything went wrong.

What does “hidden commission” mean?

For this service, the question is whether commission connected to a broker-arranged contract was properly explained to the business. A review considers the documents and what you were told when the agreement was made. A high bill alone cannot show whether commission was undisclosed.

Start by looking at the quotation, principal terms, broker agreement and any emails about charges. Keep the original documents, including attachments. If you cannot find a separate commission amount, note that for discussion rather than assuming it proves a claim.

What should you ask about your contract?

Who arranged the agreement? How was the broker paid? What explanation of fees did you receive? Was the payment described as a fixed amount or connected to energy use? Who agreed the contract for your business, and when? These questions help organise the evidence for review.

Could your business have a claim?

Our service reviews broker-arranged business energy contracts signed before 1 October 2022, with a focus on businesses spending £300 or more a month on energy. These are service screening criteria, not a decision about legal entitlement.

A claim depends on your circumstances and the evidence. Any legal position needs individual assessment. Begin with an enquiry; you do not need to download a guide or find all your paperwork first.
