What is hidden energy broker commission?
A broker may receive commission from the energy supplier for arranging your contract. It can be included in your energy rate. The concern is whether the commission and the payment arrangement were properly disclosed and agreed.
Does using a broker mean I have a claim?
No. Brokers can provide a legitimate service. Whether a claim is possible depends on the contract, the broker’s role, what you were told and the law that applies. An individual assessment is needed; repayment is not guaranteed.
Why do you mention £800 a month?
That is the business-spend level this service is aimed at. It is not a legal eligibility rule, and spending less does not establish that you have no rights. Include gas and electricity when thinking about your combined monthly spend.
Can I check an old contract or a different supplier?
Keep any previous broker-arranged contracts as well as your current one. A change of supplier does not answer whether commission was disclosed. Time limits may apply, so seek advice promptly about your circumstances.
Can I raise a complaint myself?
Yes. You can ask your broker or supplier about the commission and use their complaints process. Eligible businesses may also be able to use the Energy Ombudsman. Read Ofgem’s business energy guidance ↗.
What will a claim cost?
Fee terms for My Business Energy Refunds have not yet been confirmed. Before appointing anyone, ask for the full written terms, including any deductions from compensation, VAT, cancellation charges and potential costs if a claim is unsuccessful.
